AI Holiday Campaign by DHS Sparks Outrage Over “Festive” Deportation Message
Christmas-themed AI images used to promote strict immigration policies ignite backlash from experts, politicians, and human-rights advocates.
The Department of Homeland Security sparked widespread controversy after posting AI-generated images on social media showing immigration and customs enforcement officers wearing Santa hats and surrounded by Christmas decorations, as part of a campaign titled “You Will Go Back Home.”
The images showed officers with weapons decorated with lights, alongside armored vehicles adorned with wreaths and Christmas trees, while one shield displayed the phrase “Merry Christmas.”
The post, which also included an animated image of President Donald Trump riding on Santa Claus’s sleigh, garnered more than nine million views within days. However, it drew strong criticism from experts and politicians who argued that the campaign “glosses over mass deportation policies” and gives them a festive, lighthearted character.

Kurt Braddock, assistant professor at American University and an expert in persuasion strategies, told WIRED that the problem with such messaging is that it “facilitates aggression and normalizes the dehumanization of others,” warning that it could pave the way for further real-world violence.
The campaign comes as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to promote strict immigration policies through social media, using memes, trending formats, and popular songs to make mass deportation more palatable to the public. But data shows that hundreds of thousands of detainees in these raids do not have violent criminal records, despite the White House insisting the operations target “dangerous criminals.”
Political reactions were swift; the office of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom reposted the campaign alongside a quote from the Gospel of Matthew (25:35): “I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” signaling compassion for migrants.
The holiday-themed campaign highlights the deep division in the United States over immigration policy—between those who see it as a national security necessity and those who view it as a violation of human values, especially when presented in a festive manner that masks the harshness of reality.
