Fattal’s Bakery – A Syrian Family Tradition Serving Paterson, NJ Since 1968

From hand-baked pita bread to a full Middle Eastern supermarket, Fattal’s is a beloved Arab American landmark in North Jersey.

In the heart of Paterson, New Jersey, stands Fattal’s Bakery, one of the first Middle Eastern bakeries in North Jersey. For more than 50 years, it has been a cornerstone of Arab American culture, welcoming generations of families with the same warmth and tradition that began in 1968.

The American Dream: From Aleppo to Paterson

The story began when Michael Fattal, the family patriarch, emigrated from Aleppo, Syria to Paterson with his wife and seven children. With little more than determination and heritage, he introduced the community to authentic Syrian pita bread, baked by hand in a brick oven.

As word spread, families traveled from across New Jersey to experience the new taste. Together with his son Edmond and son-in-law Norman, Michael laid the foundation for what would become a thriving family business.

Growth Through Tradition

What started as a bakery soon expanded to a full-service Middle Eastern market. Alongside pita bread, the Fattal family introduced:

  • Baklava in countless varieties

  • Maamoul and traditional Syrian cookies

  • A wide range of Middle Eastern pastries

The demand grew so quickly that the family purchased land next to their original bakery, building a larger store to house their expanding retail selection. Today, Fattal’s imports authentic products from top distributors across the Middle East and Mediterranean.

Three Generations of Family Commitment

Now in its third generation, Fattal’s is still run by Edmond, Norman, and their children—Tiffany, Bianca, and Christopher. What has never changed are the core values instilled by Michael: hard work, honesty, and authenticity.

For the Fattal family, the true measure of success isn’t the size of the store, but the loyalty of generations of customers who call Fattal’s a family tradition.
