In a touching new episode of the program “Haki Souri”, the spotlight shines on the inspirational story of Hanaa Mohammad Alayan—a Syrian woman who transformed personal hardship into culinary triumph. From the narrow alleys of Aleppo to the streets of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Hanaa’s journey is one of determination, hope, and resilience.
Childhood in Aleppo: A City of Memory and Love
Hanaa recalls her childhood in Aleppo as full of community spirit and simplicity.
“I grew up in a large family in the old neighborhoods of Aleppo. Life was beautiful, warm, and full of love. Aleppo is my identity—it was my paradise.”
The war in Syria forced her to flee in 2013. After years of displacement and surviving near-daily danger, she eventually settled in the United States.
The Hard Road of Migration
Hanaa’s journey took her first to Turkey, where she and her family spent three and a half years.“We hoped the war would end and we’d return home. We even opened a small restaurant there.”
However, challenges like the language barrier and lack of recognition for her academic qualifications made long-term stability difficult. Eventually, she applied for resettlement through the UN refugee program and was granted asylum in the United States. She began her new life in Oregon in 2016.
Starting Over in America: Fear, Hope, and New Beginnings
Arriving in the U.S. brought both uncertainty and optimism.“It was a new chapter. I felt fear, but deep down, I believed things would improve. And they did.”
Hanaa’s four children—three daughters and a son—were still young, and the biggest initial challenge was the language barrier. But through perseverance, they adapted, while holding onto their native Arabic and Aleppan dialect.
From Home Kitchen to Restaurant: A Culinary Triumph
Hanaa began cooking in her home kitchen, eventually turning her skills into a thriving business. With over 25 years of experience in cooking, and support from local organizations and volunteers, she founded a restaurant in Oregon.“My experience in Turkey helped me, and here, kind people and nonprofits supported me in launching my restaurant.”
Her food business grew to serve hospitals, universities, and local organizations. In recognition of her excellence, she received an award for the best restaurant in Oregon two years ago.
A New Chapter in Michigan: Growth and Community
In 2024, Hanaa moved to Sterling Heights, Michigan, where she sought to expand her culinary dream and connect with a larger Arab community.“Life here feels more socially rich. One of the main reasons for the move was my daughters joining universities here.”
The Magic of Aleppan Cuisine
When asked about her cuisine, Hanaa proudly highlights dishes like Aleppan kebab, stuffed vegetables, grilled meats, and a beloved dessert called ‘Ma’amounieh’—a traditional semolina sweet.“It’s a dish we call ‘family gathering.’ Everyone should try it. The flavor is unforgettable.”
A Message to Women Refugees
To other women who were forced to leave their homelands, Hanaa offers powerful advice:“Be brave. Stay committed to your goals. Take responsibility. Never give up on your dreams or your families. There is always a way.”
Hanaa’s Heart Still Beats for Aleppo
Though her future is rooted in the U.S., her heart still holds Aleppo dearly.“I miss my homeland, my family, and my roots. But I am also focused on the future—for myself and my children. Aleppo will always live in my heart.”
Closing Words from “Haki Souri”
Hanaa’s story is a powerful reminder of what resilience, hope, and hard work can achieve. Her journey from war to success serves as a beacon of inspiration for immigrants across the globe. “We thank Hanaa for sharing her story and urge communities across the U.S. to support immigrants and refugees striving to rebuild their lives.”
