Trump Promises $2,000 Payments to Most Americans from Tariff Revenues, Excluding the Wealthy

Former President Donald Trump vows to distribute at least $2,000 per citizen from U.S. tariff revenues, claiming his economic policies made America “richer and more respected,” though details and timelines remain unclear.

President Donald Trump pledged on Sunday to give every American citizen at least $2,000 from the tariff revenues collected by his administration, except for one group — the wealthy and high-income earners.

According to ABC News, Trump said in a post on his platform “Truth Social” that the U.S. government will pay most citizens a “cash dividend” of no less than $2,000 each.

Trump noted that only high-income citizens would be excluded, though he did not specify income levels or a timeline for distribution, nor did he provide details about his plan or how the tariff revenues would be allocated to the American people.

In his post, Trump wrote: “Payments of no less than $2,000 per person will be made to all Americans, except for high-income individuals,” claiming that the country is now wealthy thanks to his tariff policies.

He added: “Tariff opponents are fools! We are now the richest and most respected nation in the world, with near-zero inflation and a record-high stock market. Retirement savings (401k) are the highest ever.”

Trump continued: “We are earning trillions of dollars, and we will soon begin paying down our massive $37 trillion debt. There are record investments in the United States, and factories are opening everywhere.”

The president had previously floated the idea of issuing cash payments to Americans months ago but did not follow through at the time.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant stated last summer that the Trump administration’s top priority for tariff revenue was to pay down the national debt, which stands at $38.12 trillion.

Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday, Besant said he had not yet discussed the proposed dividends with Trump.

He added: “The $2,000 dividends could come in different forms — perhaps as tax cuts included in the president’s agenda. You know, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, and even potential deductions for car loans.”

Trump’s post came about a week after Democrats made electoral gains across the country in several local and state races, notably winning the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia and flipping seats on Georgia’s Public Service Commission, a traditionally Republican stronghold.

After the elections, some Trump supporters criticized him for not paying enough attention to his core voter base, whom he had promised to help by lowering living costs during his campaign.
