New York Faces Over 11,500 Job Cuts in 2025, With Hudson Valley Hit Hardest
Despite a sharp rise in layoffs earlier this year, summer months show signs of stabilization in New York’s job market.

New York State has witnessed a major wave of job cuts this year, with more than 11,500 positions eliminated across multiple sectors. This troubling trend has impacted communities across the state, with a notable concentration of layoffs in regions such as the Hudson Valley. While the early months of 2025 saw a sharp spike in job losses, there is a glimmer of hope as figures point to a significant slowdown in layoffs during the summer months.
The total number of New Yorkers affected by job eliminations reached 11,501 so far in 2025. This figure is based on 117 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices submitted to the state’s Department of Labor. These notices are key indicators of mass layoffs, providing an early warning system for employees and communities.

The impact has been particularly severe in certain regions, with the Hudson Valley recording a large number of job losses. According to available data, 873 workers in the Hudson Valley alone were affected by these cuts. Within this region, Sullivan County bore the brunt with more than 350 jobs lost, while Orange County also faced major challenges with over 230 workers affected.
An analysis of monthly trends reveals a fluctuating pattern, with certain periods proving more difficult for the state’s workforce. March and May stood out as the hardest months, recording the highest numbers of job eliminations. Nearly 3,000 individuals lost their jobs in May, making it
