Qahwah House: Brewing Yemeni Tradition in the Heart of Dearborn

Ibrahim Alhasbani's Vision Brings Generational Yemeni Coffee Culture to Arab America’s Capital.

In the bustling city of Dearborn, Michigan, home to one of the largest Arab-American populations in the United States, one coffee shop stands out not just for its rich aroma but for its deeper cultural roots. Qahwah House, founded by Ibrahim Alhasbani, has become a cornerstone of traditional Yemeni coffee culture in America.

The Roots of Yemeni Coffee

Yemen is believed to be the birthplace of coffee as a global commodity. The country’s mountainous regions—such as Haraz and Bani Matar—have cultivated some of the world’s finest coffee beans for centuries. Yemeni coffee is known for its spiced undertones, naturally dried cherries, and deep earthy flavors. Yet, for decades, it was overshadowed by commercial coffee giants and lost in modern trade routes.

Ibrahim Alhasbani, a Yemeni-American entrepreneur, was determined to change that.

A Heritage Reimagined

When Alhasbani opened Qahwah House in Dearborn, he wasn’t just starting a business—he was reviving a cultural experience. The word “Qahwah” means coffee in Arabic, and in Yemen, it’s more than a drink—it’s a ritual of hospitality, poetry, and conversation.

Alhasbani sources his coffee beans directly from his family’s farm in Yemen, ensuring ethically grown, single-origin beans that maintain the authentic taste of the homeland. From qishr (a coffee husk tea with ginger and spices) to traditional brewing techniques using the jebena, Qahwah House offers patrons an immersive cultural journey.

Dearborn’s Coffee Landmark

Located on Schaefer Road, Qahwah House has quickly become a gathering space for locals and visitors alike—students, professionals, families, and coffee lovers. The shop’s traditional décor, fragrant cardamom-filled brews, and housemade Yemeni pastries create a unique ambiance that blends East and West.

Alhasbani’s mission is twofold: to introduce authentic Yemeni coffee to American audiences and to support economic sustainability back home by empowering Yemeni farmers through direct trade.

A Growing National Presence

Due to its success in Dearborn, Qahwah House has expanded to other major U.S. cities, including Brooklyn, Lombard (Illinois), and Manhattan. Still, Dearborn remains its flagship store—a cultural and commercial symbol of how diaspora communities can preserve and elevate their traditions.
