The story of Habibi Grill begins not with a traditional restaurant, but with a dream and a late-night vision. In 2008, Tarek Albast launched Midnight Lounge in Columbus’ Short North area, filling a much-needed gap for after-hours dining. For Tarek, food had always been a passion—first nurtured as a chef in Lebanon and later inspired by his mother, whose unwavering encouragement fueled his ambition to one day run his own kitchen.
Tarek often credits his mother as the cornerstone of his journey, describing her faith, sacrifice, and guidance as the foundation of every success that followed.
From Food Trucks to a Food Legacy
With the success of his first venture, Tarek knew that his dream of opening a restaurant would take persistence and small, steady steps. In May 2016, he introduced Mr. Hummus and Falafel Food Trucks, starting in Bexley before expanding to Grandview.
Offering fresh, affordable, and healthy Lebanese street food—including vegetarian options—his food trucks quickly became local favorites, serving both residents and professionals on the go. The popularity of these trucks proved that Columbus was ready to embrace authentic Lebanese cuisine.
The Opening of Mr. Hummus Grill
By March 2018—just 13 years after arriving in the United States—Tarek opened his first Mr. Hummus Grill. The restaurant quickly flourished, growing into three locations and bringing authentic Lebanese food to a wider community. With over 15 years of experience in food preparation and presentation, Tarek poured his heart into the menu, personally designing each dish. A Lebanese sous chef joined him to ensure authenticity, offering guests a flavorful experience that honors Lebanon’s culinary traditions.
Habibi Grill: A Family Legacy in Columbus
Today, Tarek’s newest venture, Habibi Grill, continues his mission of blending Lebanese hospitality with community spirit. Located at 1131 N 4th St, Columbus, OH 43201, Habibi Grill has become a gathering place for those seeking bold, authentic Middle Eastern flavors. From hummus and falafel to shawarma and grilled specialties, every dish reflects Tarek’s dedication to fresh, wholesome food.
While his mother remains the guiding light behind his success, Tarek now finds his greatest motivation in his son, Adam. For him, every milestone—from food trucks to brick-and-mortar restaurants—is part of a larger family legacy rooted in love, resilience, and community.
