Dark Personality Traits and Society: Study Identifies U.S. States with Highest Levels

University of Copenhagen study links adverse societal conditions to rising dark personality traits.

A new study from the University of Copenhagen has revealed that human beings display different levels of “dark personality” traits depending on where they live and the presence of Adverse Societal Conditions (ASC) such as inequality, corruption, and violence.

The research, which spanned 20 years and covered 183 countries worldwide, shows that personality is not fixed at birth but is deeply influenced by the environment in which individuals are raised.

The Dark Personality Explained

Psychologists define the “dark personality” as a cluster of socially and morally undesirable traits:

  • Psychopathy (lack of empathy and impulsivity)

  • Narcissism (excessive self-centeredness and need for admiration)

  • Machiavellianism (manipulative and exploitative behavior)

These traits are often linked with destructive social behaviors such as aggression, deceit, and exploitation.

U.S. States with the Highest Levels

The study found that the highest concentrations of dark personality traits are found in Nevada, New York, South Dakota, and Texas. According to the researchers, these states show strong correlations between harsh social conditions and the prevalence of dark personality tendencies.

On the other hand, Vermont, Utah, Maine, and Oregon ranked lowest. These rural states, with relatively stable economies and less intense social inequality, displayed fewer indicators of dark personality traits.

The Role of Adverse Societal Conditions

ASC refers to large-scale societal problems such as corruption, fraud, inequality, violence, and exploitation. The research team collected data using surveys, U.S. Census Bureau statistics, and FBI crime reports. They concluded that the greater the presence of adverse conditions, the higher the likelihood of dark personality traits within the population.

Dr. Ingo Zettler, one of the study’s authors, explained:“It is well known that genetic, social, and environmental factors shape personality. However, very few studies have examined how morally and socially aversive traits are influenced by these conditions.”

He added that dark personality traits come with a high social cost, contributing to patterns of aggression, exploitation, and dishonesty.

Global Implications

The study emphasizes that personality is not only inherited but also socially constructed. By improving living conditions and addressing corruption and inequality, societies may not only enhance quality of life but also reduce the prevalence of harmful personality traits over time.
