Dearborn Police Warn of Rising Bicycle Thefts Despite Overall Drop in Crime

Authorities urge residents to take stronger precautions as bike theft incidents surge in 2024, even as city crime rates decline..

The Dearborn Police Department has issued a public warning about a notable rise in bicycle thefts in recent months, urging residents to take preventive measures to safeguard their property.

In a Facebook post, police outlined several key recommendations:

  • Use a strong U-lock or heavy-duty chain to secure both the frame and wheels.

  • Park bicycles in well-lit, high-traffic areas.

  • Keep a record of the bike’s serial number and store a photograph for identification purposes.

  • Whenever possible, store bikes indoors.

  • Report any suspicious activity immediately.

This targeted warning comes even as Dearborn continues to experience an overall drop in crime. Recent 2024 statistics indicate that the city’s total crime rate has fallen by 7%, with thefts down 11.8% and commercial burglaries decreasing by 23%.

Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin credited the broader decline to a “well-planned strategy that combines advanced technology with proactive community policing.” However, officials stress that specific crime trends—like the current surge in bicycle thefts—require residents’ active participation in prevention.

Authorities also highlight that community awareness plays a crucial role in deterring thieves and ensuring stolen property can be recovered more effectively.
