Diyanet Center of America: A Beacon of Turkish Heritage and Faith in the United States

From vision to reality — how the Diyanet Center of America became a landmark for Islamic culture, education, and unity within the Turkish-American and Muslim communities.

In 2008, a visionary decision was made to establish a project that would unite and organize Turkish religious, cultural, and artistic organizations in the United States. The goal was not only to preserve the deep-rooted heritage of Turkish society but also to share the timeless wisdom and spiritual traditions of Islam with the broader American public.

After years of meticulous planning, the main center was completed in May 2013, and following several years of preparation, the Diyanet Center of America (DCA) officially opened its doors on April 2, 2016. Located in Lanham, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., it stands today as one of the most architecturally stunning and spiritually vibrant Islamic centers in North America.

The Mission of the Diyanet Center of America

The Diyanet Center of America (DCA) operates under the mission of fostering unity, spiritual growth, education, and community engagement. Guided by the values of compassion, knowledge, and inclusivity, the center serves as both a religious sanctuary and a cultural hub.

Its programs encompass:

  • Daily prayers and Friday sermons led by qualified imams trained in Islamic theology.

  • Qur’an and Arabic classes for children and adults, promoting authentic Islamic education.

  • Cultural events such as Turkish art exhibitions, music performances, and heritage festivals.

  • Community services, including counseling, social support, and interfaith outreach programs that build bridges between Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

The DCA also welcomes visitors from all backgrounds, providing guided tours and educational workshops about Islamic beliefs, Ottoman architecture, and the Turkish cultural legacy.

Architectural Beauty and Symbolism

The Diyanet Center of America is a breathtaking example of Ottoman-Turkish architecture in the modern world. Its grand mosque features a large central dome, elegant minarets, and intricate calligraphy — all designed to reflect the classical Islamic art of Istanbul. Inside, visitors find tranquility through its peaceful ambiance, marble carvings, and stained glass that fill the prayer hall with light.

The center’s complex also includes:

  • A cultural center and museum showcasing Turkish and Islamic art.

  • A library rich in Islamic scholarship and Turkish literature.

  • Educational classrooms and conference halls for seminars and community activities.

  • A guesthouse and social complex serving both visitors and residents.

This makes the DCA not just a mosque, but a comprehensive community space that connects spirituality, learning, and culture.
