Michigan Cities Rank Among Top Retirement Destinations in the U.S.
Grand Rapids and Detroit earn spots in WalletHub’s nationwide study of the best cities for retirees, highlighting affordability, healthcare, and quality of life.

Two cities in Michigan have earned recognition as retirement-friendly destinations in the United States, according to a recent study by WalletHub, a Miami-based personal finance company that helps Americans identify ideal places for retirement.
The study, reported by the Detroit Free Press, ranked Grand Rapids at No. 73 and Detroit at No. 166 in its evaluation of the best U.S. cities for retirees. The rankings considered a range of factors including cost of living, healthcare access, lifestyle activities, and overall quality of life.
Why Retirement Location Matters
Choosing the right city for retirement is critical, especially since many retirees live on a fixed income. The best retirement cities are those that minimize taxes, keep expenses manageable, and provide opportunities for part-time work or supplemental income.
High-quality healthcare and access to engaging activities are also essential for retirees looking to enjoy their later years. “The best cities offer both affordability and opportunities for retirees to remain active and secure,” said WalletHub analyst, Chip Lupo.
