The Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS): Strengthening Faith and Community in the Pacific Northwest

Founded in 2006, MAPS has grown into Washington State’s largest Islamic center — fostering unity, education, and service across one of America’s most diverse Muslim communities.

The Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS) was established in 2006 with a clear and inspiring mission: to create a vibrant Muslim community that embodies the principles of faith, humility, family, service, and justice. Located in Redmond, Washington, MAPS has since evolved into the largest Islamic center in the state, serving more than 5,000 families from over 50 different national backgrounds.

At its core, MAPS exists to bring Muslim values to life — not only within the mosque but throughout the broader community of the Pacific Northwest. Through prayer, education, charity, and interfaith outreach, MAPS stands as a beacon of inclusion and civic engagement.

Faith in Action: MAPS as a Spiritual and Social Hub

As a mosque, MAPS offers daily prayers, Friday sermons (khutbahs), Quranic classes, youth programs, and counseling services. It guides community members through every stage of life — from welcoming new births and performing marriages to honoring loved ones at their final rites.

Beyond its religious role, MAPS serves as a social hub that connects individuals, families, and organizations. It fosters friendships, supports local businesses, and strengthens intergenerational ties within Washington’s growing Muslim population.

MAPS’s mission extends beyond its congregation. The center is deeply involved in community service, outreach, and advocacy, often partnering with churches, synagogues, and civic groups to promote peace and understanding.

Community Service and Interfaith Engagement

MAPS’s mission extends beyond its congregation. The center is deeply involved in community service, outreach, and advocacy, often partnering with churches, synagogues, and civic groups to promote peace and understanding.

From food drives, refugee assistance, and environmental initiatives to interfaith dialogues and cultural events, MAPS embodies Islam’s commitment to compassion and justice. Its programs highlight the importance of shared humanity, echoing the Qur’anic call to “know one another” across lines of faith and culture.

Islam: The Faith That Inspires MAPS

Islam, the world’s second-largest religion with over 1.8 billion followers, is built on five core pillars that form the foundation of Muslim life:

  1. Shahadah – The declaration of faith in one God (Allah) and that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His messenger.

  2. Salat – Performing five daily prayers at designated times throughout the day.

  3. Zakat – Giving charity to support those in need.

  4. Sawm – Fasting, especially during Ramadan, to cultivate spiritual discipline and gratitude.

  5. Hajj – The pilgrimage to Mecca, required once in a lifetime for those who are able.

These principles guide the mission and spirit of MAPS — shaping its programs, leadership, and commitment to community well-being.

Leadership and Organization

As a non-profit institution, MAPS operates under the guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, alongside its Imams and program leaders who manage a variety of services and educational programs. Together, they ensure that MAPS continues to meet the spiritual, social, and educational needs of its members while remaining a trusted partner in regional interfaith and civic initiatives.

A Welcoming Home for All

Whether you are a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest or a newcomer seeking connection, MAPS offers a welcoming space to pray, learn, serve, and grow. Visitors are encouraged to explore the center, attend its events, and discover how Islam’s timeless values are being lived every day through community action.
