Governor Whitmer Declares April as Arab American Heritage Month in Michigan; Trump Declines National Recognition

On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed April as Arab American Heritage Month in Michigan for the fifth consecutive year, celebrating the invaluable contributions of Arab Americans to the state’s cultural and economic landscape. This annual recognition underscores the state’s commitment to honoring its diverse communities.

In her statement, Governor Whitmer highlighted the extensive impact of Arab Americans across various sectors, including medicine, law, business, education, technology, government, military service, and culture. She emphasized that since immigrating to the United States, Arab Americans have shared their rich traditions and culture with neighbors and friends while serving as exemplary citizens and public servants.

Contrastingly, President Trump has refrained from officially recognizing Arab American Heritage Month at the national level, despite previously acknowledging the importance of Arab and Muslim voters in his electoral victories, particularly in Michigan. This marks a departure from former President Biden’s precedent, who became the first president to recognize Arab American Heritage Month in 2022.

Michigan is home to more than 300,000 individuals of Middle Eastern descent, representing a significant portion of the state’s population. Communities such as Dearborn, often referred to as the “Capital of Arab America,” exemplify the profound influence and presence of Arab Americans in the state.

Governor Whitmer’s proclamation also serves as an opportunity to combat discrimination and stereotypes about Arabs through education and awareness, noting that the history of Arab Americans in the U.S. has often been marred by misconceptions, bigotry, and hatred. By acknowledging and celebrating Arab American Heritage Month, Michigan aims to foster a more inclusive and understanding environment for all its residents.
