Trump’s Approval Rating Drops to Record Low of 40% in Second Term

New poll reveals widening divide among American voters as support for Trump's overall performance continues to decline, despite modest gains in economic and immigration approval.

A recent national poll has revealed that Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 40%, marking the lowest point in his second term as president.

According to the survey conducted over the final weekend of July, public approval of Trump’s performance slipped by one point compared to mid-July, when it stood at 41%. Disapproval of his presidency rose to 56%, up by two points, creating a net approval gap of -16 points—a significant decline in public sentiment.

When Trump began his second term in January, he held a positive net approval of 47% approval versus 41% disapproval. However, those numbers have steadily shifted, with opposition growing over time.

The breakdown of support shows that 83% of Republicans still back Trump, but he receives approval from only 3% of Democrats. Among independent voters, only about one-third express approval of his job performance.

A separate poll conducted by The Economist/YouGov showed nearly identical results, also placing Trump’s approval at 40% and net approval at -15 points—another record low for his second term.

Despite the overall decline, there were slight upticks in public sentiment regarding specific issues. Approval of Trump’s handling of the economy rose to 38%, up three points since mid-July. Likewise, approval of his immigration policies rose from 41% to 43%.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,023 American adults between July 26 and July 28, with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
