Al-Nakheel Market and Restaurant: Iraqi Flavors Thriving in Chicago’s Arab Community
From Baghdad to Chicago, Ammar Al-Nuaimi brings authentic Middle Eastern food and culture to the heart of the Midwest.

Ammar Al-Nuaimi, originally from Iraq, moved to the United States 19 years ago and settled in the city of Chicago, Illinois. In 2021, he opened Al-Nakheel Market and Restaurant in North Chicago, a neighborhood known for its vibrant and diverse Arab community that includes Iraqis, Egyptians, Moroccans, and many others.
Al-Nakheel serves as both a grocery store and a restaurant, offering imported Arab and Middle Eastern products alongside freshly prepared dishes. Shoppers can find everything from traditional spices and fresh produce to specialty goods that cater to the tastes of the local Arab diaspora.
During our visit, Ammar discussed the rising prices of imported goods and the unique challenges that Arab store owners face in the United States—particularly in major cities like Chicago. He also highlighted the growing demand for halal meat, which Al-Nakheel proudly offers to its customers, ensuring quality and authenticity.

We sampled some of the restaurant’s specialties, including Iraqi kabab, Iraqi qas (a grilled meat dish), and freshly baked pastries. Each dish carried the deep, smoky flavors and seasoning profiles that make Iraqi cuisine beloved across the Arab world. The quality of ingredients and traditional cooking techniques make Al-Nakheel a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Middle Eastern food in Chicago.
For many in the community, Al-Nakheel is more than just a place to shop and eat—it’s a cultural hub where people gather, share stories, and keep their traditions alive.
