Trump Warns Social Security and Medicare Could Collapse Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown
As the U.S. government shutdown enters its third week, President Trump accuses Democrats of risking vital healthcare programs while both parties remain locked in a bitter funding dispute.

Former President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning that Social Security and Medicare programs may soon face collapse if Democrats do not agree to pass the stalled government funding legislation, as the shutdown extends into its third week.
During a press conference, Trump said he had urged Democrats to reach a compromise on funding, but one of them allegedly responded, “That means death.” Trump replied, “This has nothing to do with death. They’re the ones causing it because they’ll lose Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare — the country will go bankrupt, and there will be no healthcare coverage of any kind.”
The Core Dispute: Healthcare Funding and Immigration
The standoff centers on the Democrats’ refusal to approve a funding bill that includes cuts to healthcare programs. Republicans argue that these cuts are necessary because, in their view, part of the funds are being used to cover medical costs for undocumented immigrants. Democrats, however, counter that the reductions threaten core safety-net programs relied upon by millions of American citizens.
Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid remain the lifeline for millions of Americans. By late 2024, data showed that around 53 million people — roughly 16% of the U.S. population — were receiving monthly Social Security benefits. Medicare and Medicaid provide crucial healthcare coverage for seniors, low-income individuals, and the most vulnerable populations across the country.

White House and Political Reactions
White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson defended the administration’s stance, stating that “Democrats chose to shut down the government because they want to offer free healthcare to illegal immigrants. They can end this shutdown at any moment by supporting the temporary funding measure they themselves approved just six months ago.”
In contrast, Democratic strategist Doug Gordon argued that “no one wins from a government shutdown, but Republicans will bear the political responsibility — especially with healthcare costs continuing to rise.”
Meanwhile, GOP strategist Matt Klink maintained that Republicans are “comfortable” with this confrontation, saying Democrats have “crossed the line by trying to push major policy changes under the guise of a funding crisis.”
Uncertain End to the Shutdown
As the shutdown drags on, it remains unclear when — or if — both sides will reach a deal to reopen the government. Economists warn that a prolonged shutdown could worsen the nation’s economic and social challenges, with millions of Americans depending on timely government services and benefits.
