Largest Mosque in the USA: The Story of Dearborn’s Islamic Center
Uncovering how the Dearborn mosque became a spiritual, educational, and cultural cornerstone.

The largest mosque in the United States, and indeed in North America, is the Islamic Center of America located in Dearborn, Michigan. Covering approximately 120,000 square feet, this grand Shia mosque stands as both a religious and cultural landmark.
Originally founded in 1949, the center moved to its current impressive facility in 2005, a structure valued at $14 million. Its prayer hall can accommodate over 3,000 worshippers, and the complex includes a school, library, conference hall, and various administrative and community spaces.

Upon its opening, media coverage described the Islamic Center of America as the largest mosque in the country, noting its capacity with a main prayer hall for over 1,000 people and a banquet hall for around 2,000 attendees.
The mosque‘s role extends beyond worship—it serves as an educational, cultural, and interfaith hub. It hosts the Muslim American Youth Academy (MAYA) and offers programs that foster community, knowledge, and outreach.
There are other notable large mosques across the U.S., such as Atlanta’s Al-Farooq Masjid, which can hold up to 5,000 worshippers however, in physical size and prominence, none surpass Dearborn’s Islamic Center of America.
