Food is more than nourishment—it is memory, culture, and identity. For the Baker family, founders of Al-Basha Restaurant in Paterson, New Jersey, food became a bridge between their Palestinian roots and their American journey. What began as one man’s dream in Ramallah blossomed into a thriving family business that today stands as one of Paterson’s most beloved Arab halal dining destinations.
The Roots: Ramallah and Jericho
The story begins with Yaser Baker, who grew up in Ramallah, Palestine. His first steps into the culinary world came in the summers, working at an ice cream shop that offered relief to locals and tourists under the blazing sun. In the winters, Yaser worked in a restaurant in Jericho, where he learned to prepare warm, comforting Palestinian dishes that reflected the hospitality and richness of Arab culture.
These early experiences instilled in him a passion for food that would define his life.
The Journey to America
Yaser immigrated to the United States with hopes of turning his culinary dreams into reality. On a ferry boat along the Hudson River, he immersed himself in American and Italian cuisines, mastering recipes and techniques that broadened his culinary perspective.
For eleven years, he worked tirelessly, learning, adapting, and sharpening his skills, all while holding onto the vision of opening his own restaurant.
Al-Basha is Born
In 1998, Yaser took a bold leap of faith and opened Al-Basha Restaurant in Paterson. The name, meaning “the nobleman,” reflected the elegance and respect he wanted to bring to his food. The restaurant quickly became popular among locals and visitors alike, drawn by its authentic Palestinian flavors and the welcoming atmosphere Yaser cultivated.
The Next Generation: A Family Legacy
Yaser’s passion for food and community inspired his sons, Ammar and Mohammad, to join the family business. They introduced new energy, modern touches, and innovative recipes while preserving the authenticity of Palestinian cuisine.
Together, the family expanded the business with a second location on Crooks Avenue in Paterson, giving more people the chance to experience a true “taste of Ramallah.”
The Experience Today
Al-Basha offers more than just food—it provides a cultural experience. Guests can savor classics like shawarma, lamb kebabs, falafel, and maqluba, alongside desserts such as baklava and knafeh Nabulsieh. Whether dining in or ordering takeout, visitors are welcomed with the same warmth and hospitality that defines Palestinian culture.
