Masjid Al-Rahman Rhode Island: From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Islamic Center

Masjid Al-Rahman stands as one of the most important Islamic institutions serving Muslims in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and the surrounding areas.

Masjid Al-Rahman Pawtucket RI

Masjid Al-Rahman stands as one of the most important Islamic institutions serving Muslims in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and the surrounding areas. Since its establishment in 1999, the Masjid has played a vital role in providing religious services, fostering community cohesion, and supporting the spiritual growth of a steadily expanding Muslim population.

History and Establishment

Masjid Al-Rahman was founded in 1999 to meet the religious and communal needs of Muslims living in Pawtucket and nearby cities. Initially, the Masjid operated from a modest location that reflected the limited resources of a growing but committed congregation. Despite its small size, the Masjid quickly became a focal point for worship and community life.

As attendance increased and activities expanded, the original space soon proved insufficient. Recognizing the need for growth, and with the blessings of Allah and the support of the community, the Masjid relocated in 2005 to a larger facility on Dunnell Lane in Pawtucket. This move allowed the Masjid to broaden its religious programs and better serve its members.

Recognition and Organizational Growth

In 2008, the Masjid was officially registered as the Muslim Society of Rhode Island, gaining recognition as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. This milestone strengthened its institutional foundation, improved governance, and enabled greater transparency and sustainability in serving the community.

The New Building in Darlington

As the Muslim population in Pawtucket and surrounding areas continued to grow, the need for a permanent and purpose-built facility became clear. The Masjid community undertook the ambitious project of constructing a new building in the Darlington neighborhood. This effort culminated successfully, and the move to the new Masjid was completed in December 2021.

The new building now serves as a modern Islamic center designed to accommodate the expanding congregation and a wider range of religious and educational activities.

Religious Services and Activities

Since its inception, Masjid Al-Rahman has consistently provided essential religious services, including:

These programs form the spiritual backbone of the Masjid, nurturing faith, knowledge, and unity among worshippers of all ages.

Educational and Community Connections

Masjid Al-Rahman maintains strong connections with broader Islamic institutions, including the Islamic School of Rhode Island, which supports Islamic education for youth, and national organizations such as the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). These relationships help integrate the local community into wider educational and organizational networks within the American Muslim landscape.

A Growing Role in Rhode Island

Today, Masjid Al-Rahman is more than a place of worship—it is a symbol of stability, resilience, and growth for Muslims in Rhode Island. Its journey from a small prayer space to a full-scale Islamic center reflects the dedication of its community and its commitment to faith, service, and continuity.

As the Muslim population in Rhode Island continues to expand, Masjid Al-Rahman remains positioned to play an increasingly central role in spiritual life, education, and community development for generations to come.
