Powerful Winter Storm Disrupts Travel Across the United States

A major winter storm is sweeping across the United States, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and travel disruptions to the Midwest and East Coast, while California faces flood risks amid severe holiday weather.

U.S. winter storm

Several U.S. states are experiencing a powerful winter storm expected to bring snow and ice to parts of the Upper Midwest and the East Coast over the weekend, threatening major disruptions to both ground and air travel during one of the busiest periods of the year.

The National Weather Service said the storm will begin Thursday evening in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin with freezing rain, before reaching Michigan on Friday morning. It is then expected to move eastward into western and central Pennsylvania later in the day.

Heavy Snow Warnings Raise Holiday Travel Concerns

In New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, winter storm warnings have been issued from Friday evening through midday Saturday, with expected snowfall accumulations ranging between 10 and 20 centimeters, conditions that could make travel extremely difficult.

According to ABC News, snow showers may begin Friday afternoon in New York City, continuing into the evening before tapering off Saturday morning. Forecasts indicate that New York City, northern New Jersey, the southern Hudson Valley, and western Pennsylvania could see the heaviest snowfall, with totals reaching 8 to 9 inches.

USA Today reported that the storm comes at a particularly sensitive time as millions of Americans return from the Christmas holiday, increasing the risk of widespread flight delays and cancellations. Airlines have already reported more than 2,000 delayed flights and dozens of cancellations in recent days due to weather conditions.

Contrasting Weather Extremes Across the United States

At the same time, California is facing a different set of weather threats, including flash flood warnings and thunderstorms caused by persistent heavy rainfall. Authorities warned that roads could turn into rivers and that landslides may worsen, highlighting the sharp contrast in weather extremes between the West and East Coasts.

The current storm is considered one of the most significant winter systems of December, combining heavy snow, freezing rain, and strong winds—posing a dual threat to travel and daily activities. Local authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for possible power outages, and stay alert as emergency teams continue to monitor weather developments around the clock.
