The Trump administration has introduced significant changes to the U.S. citizenship test, making the path to naturalization more demanding for immigrants and Green Card holders. Starting October 20, applicants must answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly, up from the previous requirement of 6 out of 10, as part of the revised U.S. civics exam.
The updated test expands the pool of possible questions from 100 to 128, focusing more on U.S. government structure, political history, and civic duties. At the same time, simpler questions about holidays and geography will be reduced or eliminated.

According to USCIS spokesperson Matthew Tragesser, the revision aims to ensure “full integration” of new citizens who are expected to strengthen America’s values and contribute to society. Julie Mitchell, legal director of the CARC Citizenship Center, criticized the move, saying it will make the process “even harder for those with lower literacy levels or limited access to study materials.”
In addition to the tougher test, applicants will now have to prove good moral character by showing evidence of positive community contributions, such as volunteer work or clean legal records. Immigration officers will conduct more in-depth background checks, potentially interviewing relatives, co-workers, and neighbors.
Critics argue that these measures are part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to restrict immigration and delay naturalization. Supporters, on the other hand, claim the reforms promote stronger civic understanding and commitment to American values.

Despite these challenges, experts like Professor Amanda Frost highlight the historical importance of immigrants in shaping the U.S. economy, noting that nearly half of America’s Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children.
