A new report based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that life expectancy in the United States varies dramatically depending on the state. The gap between the highest and lowest averages reaches nearly nine years, highlighting stark differences tied to geography, income, healthcare access, and lifestyle.
Highest and Lowest Life Expectancy States
At the top of the list is Hawaii, where the average life expectancy is 79.9 years (77 for men and 83.1 for women). In sharp contrast, Mississippi ranks last with only 70.9 years on average (67.7 for men and 74.3 for women).
Other top-ranking states include:
-
Massachusetts: 79.6 years
-
Connecticut: 79.2 years
-
New Jersey & New York: 79 years each
-
Minnesota: 78.8 years
At the bottom, alongside Mississippi, are:
-
West Virginia: 71 years
-
Alabama: 72 years
-
Louisiana: 72.2 years
-
Kentucky: 72.3 years
Geographic and Social Divide
The report reveals that states with the longest lifespans are generally located in the Northeast and the West, while the shortest lifespans are concentrated in the South. Experts attribute this divide to deep-rooted differences in history, income levels, healthcare infrastructure, and lifestyle habits.
Gender Gap in Life Expectancy
Across all states, women outlive men by 5 to 7 years. Dr. Analise Cadena of Feel30 Clinic emphasized that men in particular need to adopt healthier lifestyles — including balanced nutrition, quality sleep, regular physical activity, and preventive checkups. She stressed that the goal is not only to extend life but also to improve quality of life.
Addressing the Gaps
Health experts believe reducing these disparities will require coordinated efforts from both state and federal governments. Key strategies include expanding access to healthcare, encouraging healthy living, and reducing economic and social inequalities that contribute to higher mortality rates in certain regions.
