Alaska’s Juneau Faces Record Flood Risk from Mendenhall Glacier “Death Basin”

Authorities in Juneau, Alaska, have warned of potential record-breaking floods due to a massive water release from the “Death Basin” behind the Mendenhall Glacier River.

Juneau, Alaska faces historic flood risks as the Mendenhall Glacier’s “Death Basin” fills from rain and snowmelt.

Authorities in Juneau, Alaska, have warned of potential record-breaking floods due to a massive water release from the “Death Basin” behind the Mendenhall Glacier River. The basin has filled this spring and summer from rain and melting snow.

The National Weather Service stated that peak flood risk is expected at 4:00 PM local time on Wednesday. The city has closed all facilities along the Mendenhall River since Tuesday afternoon through the end of Wednesday, including the public library and sports complexes.

Local authorities issued an emergency disaster declaration on August 8 as a precaution to protect lives and property, noting that the water volume could exceed historical flood levels.

Evacuation routes have been published for residents in areas expected to be submerged under 17 feet of water, with calls for organized evacuation and avoidance of the river.

Local, state, and federal agencies continue monitoring the situation and preparing to respond to the water flow impact.
